Translate and transliterate WhatsApp messages

Reply Wizard adds a Read translation control under incoming WhatsApp Web messages written in another language. It shows the message in your own language, transliterated into Latin letters, or both at once, in twelve languages. When Chrome already has the language pack, the translation happens on your own computer and the message never leaves the page.

How to translate a WhatsApp message on your computer

To translate a WhatsApp message: install Reply Wizard in Chrome, choose your language under Translation in its settings, then click Read translation under the message in WhatsApp Web. The translation appears on its own panel below the original, which is never replaced.

  1. Install the extension

Add Reply Wizard from the Chrome Web Store and open web.whatsapp.com.

  2. Choose your language and mode

In the settings, under Translation, pick the language you read and whether you want a translation, a transliteration, or both. The gear on the translation bar changes them from inside the chat.

  3. Click Read translation

Under a message in another language or script, click Read translation. It appears only where it is useful, so an English message in an English chat gets no control.

Translation, transliteration, or both

Reply Wizard offers three ways to read a message: Translation gives its meaning in your language, Transliteration gives the same words in Latin letters for a language you speak but cannot read, and Both gives the transliteration first and then the meaning.

The three modes, shown on the message "நான் office ல meeting முடிச்சிட்டு வரேன்"
What you getExample
TranslationWhat the message means, in your languageI’ll come once I finish a meeting at the office
TransliterationThe same words in Latin letters, spelled the way people type them in a chatnaan office-la meeting mudichittu varen
BothTransliteration first, then the meaning. Costs one extra requestnaan office-la meeting mudichittu varen / I’ll come once I finish a meeting at the office

The twelve languages

Reply Wizard translates WhatsApp messages into English, Hindi, Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, Malayalam, Marathi, Bengali, Arabic, Spanish, French and Chinese (Simplified). Any other language can be typed in as a language code, so nothing is refused.

The message itself can be in any language. Reply Wizard offers the control when a message contains letters outside the script of your language, and where Chrome's on-device language detector is available it also catches a same-script language, such as Spanish for an English reader.

Translated on your own computer

When Chrome has the language pack for a pair of languages, Reply Wizard translates with Chrome's built-in Translator on your own computer: no request, no provider, and the message never leaves the page. Otherwise the translation goes to the AI provider you already use for replies.

Chrome cannot transliterate, so Transliteration and Both always use your AI provider. Chrome also cannot translate Malayalam, Gujarati, Punjabi or Urdu on-device at the time of writing, so those go to your provider too. Automatic translation is on by default and applies only to the on-device path, which costs nothing and makes no request.

Chrome documents its on-device translation as the Translator API, part of Chrome built-in AI.

Translate your own reply before you send it

Reply Wizard can also translate your draft into the language the other person is writing in. It reads their recent messages rather than guessing a language code, so a reply to a code-mixed chat stays code-mixed, and the translation replaces your draft in the message box for you to read and send yourself.

Questions

Questions about translating WhatsApp messages

How do I translate a WhatsApp message on my computer?

Install Reply Wizard in Chrome, choose your language under Translation in its settings, and click Read translation under the message in WhatsApp Web. The translation appears below the original.

Can I read Hindi or Tamil messages in English letters?

Yes. Choose Transliteration and Reply Wizard shows the same words in Latin letters, spelled the way people type them in a chat, for a language you speak but cannot read. Choose Both to get the meaning as well.

Is WhatsApp message translation free?

On-device translation with Chrome's built-in Translator is free and makes no request. Otherwise a translation uses the AI provider you already use for replies: free with your own key, which your provider bills, or part of a Reply Wizard plan's allowance.

Does it replace the original message?

No. The original stays exactly where it is, and the translation is added on its own panel below it.

Can it translate my reply into their language?

Yes. Translate your draft from the reply bar and it is rewritten in the language the other person is writing in. Nothing is sent: you read it and press send yourself.

Is my message sent anywhere to be translated?

Not when Chrome translates on-device: the message never leaves the page. Otherwise it goes to the AI provider you chose, or through our gateway on a Reply Wizard plan, where it is not kept.
